I'm with you on most of this, but you lost me with the societal battles. We're being torn apart for fun & profit. Here's an example of how like minded most Americans are. Somewhere very close to 10% of the people want to ban all abortion. Somewhere around 8% want to allow all abortion, all the way to 39 weeks. Around 70% say 15 weeks is OK, the balance is shortly thereafter.
Currently, one party holds all the cards at the federal level, owning the Senate, House, & White House. They could easily pass a law providing a legal right to abortion at 15 weeks. They'd have 70% of the population behind them. Do they do this? No, they stoke the battle for fun & profit.
I agree with most of that. I would just counter with the idea that fixation on fun and profit is itself a bad model. Politicians make bad predictions and act selfishly because of their bad model. If they develop better models, or we elect different politicians who have better models it would help.
Yes, that's a lazy shortcut. Politicians—I believe—try to operate with cold efficiency. But this cold efficiency is allowing people to be hurt for the gain of the politician. Which is even worse than my off-the cuff remark. Allowing the people to be hurt in a manner of cold efficiency, points to politicians operating in a psycho-pathological manner ... so in this light, 'fun & profit' is a bit of understating the actual horrors.
And then add on top of that, there are all sorts of unintended consequences that stack on top of one another in a complicated system. So I agree, the status quo is not ideal, and needs to be worked on
